Duke Raleigh Hospital and our staff have received recognition for efforts in providing outstanding care. Here are a few of our award highlights.

United Way Campaign

Pat Kramer, director of case management at Duke Raleigh Hospital received the honor of Wake County Campaign Leader of the Year for her efforts during the 2007 United Way Campaign. The following is an excerpt from the United Way about Kramer’s innovative campaign techniques.

"Pat Kramer has served as the Campaign Leader for the second year in a row at Duke Raleigh Hospital, and each time has taken the campaign efforts to another level. An amazing professional, Pat willingly brought her enthusiasm, experience, leadership and commitment to community initiatives to the table and led Duke Raleigh to another year of success."

Healthcare Heroes 2008

Ralph Moore, former Duke Raleigh Hospital Advisory Board Chairman received the professional excellence award in the "Volunteer" category for the 2008 Triangle Business Journal Health Care Heroes Awards. Moore has guided Duke Raleigh Hospital's growth and development and helped pave the way for a five-year plan at Duke Raleigh Hospital and laid the groundwork for growth in patient volume and new clinical services including the Duke Raleigh Cancer Center and Duke Medicine Plaza in 2007.

Alice Rowell, RN, surgical services, was the recipient of the professional excellence award in the "Nurse" category for the 2008 Triangle Business Journal Health Care Heroes Awards. Rowell was nominated for her work to improve orthopaedic care and education in Nicaragua with the nonprofit group Cooperative Orthopaedics between Nicaragua and America (COAN).

Friends of Nursing 2008

The Duke University Health System Friends of Nursing Program was established to recognize professional excellence in nursing practice, nursing education and nursing research, to enhance the status of nursing and to promote the image of nursing as a positive career choice. Duke Raleigh Hospital has been participating in the program since 2000 and presents the Myra Maddox and Hill Rom Awards to two nurses each year.

Case manager Joan Paramore, RN received the Myra Maddox Award for excellence in medical surgical nursing on August 15, 2007. Paramore is a case manager, working mostly with orthopaedic patients. The same day Duke Raleigh’s Hill Rom Award was given to Carol Smart, RN of Duke Hematology Oncology. Smart has been a nurse with Duke Hematology Oncology since the clinic opened eight years ago, and is a breast cancer survivor herself.

The Great 100

Monette Mabolo, RN was a recipient of the 2007 Great 100 award for excellence in nursing. The Great 100 is a peer organization dedicated to honoring the nursing profession in North Carolina. The organization is not only committed to recognizing outstanding individuals, but also to promoting the profession and organizing scholarship funds for Registered Nurse education.

Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Nurse of the Year - 2007

Duke Raleigh’s own PACU team leader, Angela McClendon, RN, BSN, CPAN, CNIV received the honor of PACU Nurse of the Year from the State of North Carolina for 2007. She was honored at the state conference of the North Carolina Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (NCAPAN) on September 22-23, 2007 in Charlotte, NC. McClendon has been at nurse at Duke Raleigh Hospital for 18 years and considers this “the ultimate gold star.”

2007 Abbott Diabetes Care Provider of the Year

The Diabetes Center at Duke Raleigh Hospital was awarded a 2007 Abbott Diabetes Care Provider of the Year Award. The annual award is presented to ADA recognized education programs that exceed the national standards for providing patient care through excellence in caring for individuals with diabetes.

NCNA Hallmarks of Healthy Workplaces Recognition

Duke Raleigh Hospital has been named the first hospital recipient in the state of the Hallmarks of Healthy Workplaces designation by the North Carolina Nurses Association Professional Practice Advocacy Coalition (NCNA). The nursing recognition is given to facilities that have developed healthy workplaces for nursing staff and advocate nursing involvement in all facets of the organization.

DUHS Teamwork Award

The Duke Raleigh Inpatient Satisfaction Team was the recipient of the 2005 Duke University Health System Teamwork Award. The award recognizes a group or team of staff and faculty who cultivate cooperation, collaboration and communication with the purpose of advancing the department goals and the University mission.

Health Care Heroes 2007

Julie McQueen, patient navigator, was recognized in the March 30 issue of Triangle Business Journal as a 2007 Health Care Hero for Community Outreach. The award is in honor of her dedication to her patients at Duke Cancer Center Raleigh as well as her unwavering comittment to community education through organizations such as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Powell G. Fox, Jr. was the recipient of the 2006 Triangle Business Journal’s Health Care Heroes - Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is in honor of his lifelong commitment, impact and service in health care in the Raleigh area. Dr. Fox's story was featured in the April 21 issue of the Triangle Business Journal and detailed his many years in health care including service as first lieutenant in the Medical Corp of the U.S. Army as well as more than thirty years of involvement with Duke Raleigh including the selection of the hospital’s present location.

Alice Aycock Poe Center – 2005 Gordon Smith Jr. Award

Duke Raleigh Hospital was awarded the Gordon Smith Jr. Award for continuous support of healthy lifestyle education by the Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education. The award was in recognition of the hospital’s partnership in the RAH! For Rolesville (Really Awesome Health) program since its inception in 2000. The goal of the program is to improve health education in the public schools by bringing health educators directly to the students in their own classrooms and was developed to have a life-long impact on students by reaching them as they begin forming their health habits.

Aster Awards for Excellence in Marketing

Duke Raleigh was the Gold Winner of the 2006 Aster Awards contest for our employee newsletter Vital Signs.

23rd Annual Healthcare Advertising Awards

Duke Raleigh was awarded a Silver 2006 Healthcare Advertising Award for our patient handbook.
